Frequently Asked Specialized Kinesiology Questions

What is Specialized Kinesiology and how does it work?

What is Specialized Kinesiology?

Specialized Kinesiology is a holistic approach to health using muscle testing feedback as a tool for determining imbalances in the body’s energy system. A combination of balancing techniques are used: Acupressure, Neurolymphatic Massage, Neurovascular Holding Points, Meridian work, Emotional work, Gait reflex balancing, Food, and Substance testing including desensitization, and more. Clients often experience improvements in the areas of posture, coordination, strength, balance and even sleep. Many happily report a significant decrease in emotional stress, physical pain, and food reactions.

Can I use Specialized Kinesiology with other modalities and therapies?

Yes, a Specialized Kinesiology balance can be performed as a standalone procedure or can be combined with other modalities including massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, essential oils, homeopathy, health or fitness coaching, etc. Having a balanced energy system often enhances other therapies reducing the time and effort required to achieve success. 😊

Is this workshop similar to Touch For Health, which I taught in the past?

SK Master Series Level 1 is a great course for those who’ve taken TFH in the past. It will definitely give you a leg up but is not necessary to attend SK Master 1.

The primary difference is that in this course, we only use one muscle test instead of needing to learn 14 different muscles to balance the body’s energy system. Many past students have said this makes balancing the body’s energy system much easier. There are different corrections that you learn as well; You will be working with the Neurolymphatic Points/Chapman Reflexes, Neurovascular Holding Points/Bennett Reflexes, Meridians, Acupressure Holding Points, Gait Reflexes, Tibetan Figure 8 Energy Pathways. In addition, students will learn not only to test for Food and Substance Sensitivities but learn a valuable Desensitization Protocol as well.

Who are these workshops for?

Specialized Kinesiology is for anyone wanting to improve their own health or the health of others! These workshops are especially helpful for MT’s, ND’s, PT’s, OT’s, LAc’s, DC’s, health coaches, doulas, fitness and athletic trainers and more. Basically, anyone who is passionate about healing will benefit from learning these techniques. There is no prerequisit for SK level 1.

What can clients expect to feel after a balancing session?

Clients can expect to feel great! Being energetically balanced gives you an added advantage to face everyday stressful challenges. Common clients descriptions after a session include feeling balanced and even, more flexible, grounded, motivated, clear headed, confident, release, peaceful, and pain free.

What happens during a kinesiology session?

Each session is unique depending on each individual’s needs at the time. The sessions are performed fully clothed and can be done sitting, standing, lying down, or a combination of these.

Your practitioner will ask you to briefly describe your health history and discuss your goals for the session. You’ll be asked to fill out a new client intake form which includes past injuries and current health concerns.

Before beginning, you’ll be instructed to rub specific acupressure reflex points to improve brain/body communication. This will enhance the experience of receiving accurate feedback during muscle monitoring.

The practitioner will have you place your limbs in specific positions while applying light pressure to check your muscle response. She will touch various reflexes on your body while lightly muscle testing.  If an imbalance is present, the muscle will respond by temporarily unlocking.

The practitioner will then use gentle, non-invasive techniques to restore balance. This can include massaging specific reflexes, holding points on your head, tracing meridian pathways, working with acupressure points, or working directly with the muscle’s origin and insertions. Many techniques assist in balancing. The way we determine if a reflex is balanced is by performing the same test and observing a clear indicator change in the muscle response.

How often do I need to receive a balance?

There is no set answer to this question. With the fast paced life many of us are living, we are often thrown out of balance physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I usually tell my clients to call me when they either have a specific problem or are ready to “peel back more layers of the onion”. Many of us have experienced past physical or emotional traumas that have ripple effects years later. Specialized Kinesiology can help reverse some of the stressful effects from the past.

Terri often has clients that alternate between scheduling a balance for one session and massage therapy for the next. She has other clients that prefer if she includes energy balancing within a massage therapy session.

How can Kinesiology help children?

Kinesiology can help children in almost any aspect of their life! Instructor Terri Kaus used kinesiology to discover and address her child’s food allergies. It can also be used to help anxiety, coordination, eating problems, sleeping issues, performance, confidence, attachment issues, listening skills, brain integration and more. If a child is too small to be muscle tested, a surrogate can be used. See surrogate testing below.

How many sessions do I need to see an improvement?

There is no set number. Each individual will respond differently depending on the nature of their condition(s). Some issues can be resolved in a single session, while others may take a bit longer. Incredible results are often seen before the session ends!

What is Surrogate Muscle Testing?

Surrogate testing is used when one person stands in for an individual that is not able to be muscle tested because they are too small (like a baby or toddler), too weak, or too sick. It can also be used for animals and pets.

The surrogate’s muscles are tested in place of the subjects while maintaining physical contact with the subject during the procedure.

What is Reactive Muscle Testing?

Reactive muscle technique is a truly amazing corrective technique that restores major muscle function instantly!

Sometimes we have muscles that are neurologically switched off as a result of past injuries, stress, or strain. The muscle is strong when tested alone, but when tested in succession with another, it suddenly loses power and shuts off, leaving it in a weakened state. We call muscle “A” a  “bully” or “reactor”  because it keeps intimidating muscle “B”, the “reactive” muscle causing it to weaken and shut down. This leads to compensation patterns that further deepen the body’s muscular dysfunction.

Signs that we are dealing with a dysfunctional muscle pattern may be chronic pain, stiffness, large flabby muscles that will not strengthen no matter how much you exercise, limited range of motion, etc. You simply can’t heal, nothing holds and even the best therapies only work temporarily at best. The reason nothing works is caused by a neurological reaction you have no control over.

The first step is to identify all the involved muscles. The second step is to undergo muscle re-education restoring nerve communication pathways so the muscles can fire properly and show their strength.
