Winter Wellness & The Water Element: A TCM Guide to the Bladder and Kidney Meridians
Building Resilience, Courage, and Emotional Flow through the Water Element
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Winter is governed by the Water Element, which includes the Kidney and Bladder meridians. I always think of this time of year as our invitation to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and really listen to what our body and emotions are asking for.
These two meridians influence our deepest reserves of energy, our sense of emotional safety, our stress response, and our ability to release what no longer serves us.
When Water is balanced, we feel grounded, courageous, adaptable, and emotionally resilient. When it’s depleted or blocked, fear, exhaustion, and emotional heaviness can creep in. And let’s be honest—we’ve all been there. 💙
Kidney & Bladder: A Beautiful Partnership
- Kidney’s emotional role: Safety, courage, life force, inner strength
- Bladder’s emotional role: Release, boundaries, adaptability, emotional flow
I like to think of the Kidneys as our emotional “home base.” They give us that deep inner sense of safety and strength.
The Bladder helps us let go of what we don’t need to carry anymore—emotionally, mentally, and energetically.
Together, they support healthy boundaries, confidence, and trust in life’s process. When these two are working well, we don’t feel so weighed down by life.
When the Water Element Is in Balance
When Kidney and Bladder energy is flowing well, you may notice:
- Emotional stability
- A sense of inner calm
- Courage to face challenges
- The ability to let things go
- Healthy recovery from stress
- Trust in yourself
- Comfortable vulnerability
- Strong resilience
This is when life feels more manageable—even when things aren’t perfect.
In-Balance Affirmation:
- “I feel safe in my body and my life.
- “I trust myself and the flow of life.”
I often encourage my clients to gently repeat this during Winter. It’s so powerful.
When the Water Element Is Out of Balance
When Kidney or Bladder energy is depleted or blocked, you may notice:
- Chronic worry or fear
- Fatigue and burnout
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Holding onto past hurts
- Resistance to change
- Insecurity
- Emotional rigidity
- Feeling stuck
Many people tell me:
- “I feel tired all the time.”
- “I just can’t shut my mind off.”
- “I feel like I am doing everything by myself.”
Water Element & the Nervous System
The Water Element is closely connected to:
- The stress response
- Adrenal balance
- Fight-or-flight patterns
- Emotional survival instincts
When Kidney and Bladder energy is stressed, the nervous system can stay stuck in “high alert.” That constant feeling of being “on edge” isn’t your fault. It’s your body asking for support. When we nourish Water, the body can finally rest, repair, and reset.
Gentle Winter Self-Support (Specialized Kinesiology Style)
These are simple techniques I love sharing because you can use them anytime.
1. Neurolymphatic Reflex Points (Chapman Reflexes)
Gentle rubbing of neurolymphatic points supports lymphatic drainage and detox. For Winter support, focus on:
Kidney Neurolymphatic Reflexes
- Front: 1 inch above and beside the navel
- Back: At the level of T12 & L1
Bladder Neurolymphatic Reflexes
- Front: Along the superior border of the pubic bone and the sides of the navel
- Back: Beside the spine and the two prominent hip bone knobs at L5

Using your fingertips, apply moderate to firm circular pressure for 20–30 seconds on each side. I always say: firm, but loving. This helps clear lymphatic congestion and supports detoxification. In my SK sessions, these points are often used to deepen corrections.
2. Neurovascular Holding Points (Bennett Reflexes)
These are wonderful for calming emotional overload. Lightly holding these points increases blood flow and soothes associated emotions.
Kidney Neurovascular Points
- Back of the head (occipital protuberance)
Bladder Neurovascular Points
- Frontal eminence (between eyebrows and hairline)
- Glabella (between the eyebrows)

Place fingertips lightly at these locations and hold for 30–60 seconds. I often invite clients to just “be” here—no fixing, no forcing, just relaxed breathing. In SK, these points help reset neurological stress patterns beautifully.
3. Emotional Repatterning
While holding your reflex points, gently repeat:
- I am safe in my body.
- I release what no longer serves me.
- I give and receive love freely.
- Let this sink in. Your body is listening. 💙
